How Can I Tell If I’m Ready to Become a Member?
Unitarian Universalism is rooted in connection. Many people participate in a UU congregation for years as friends—and you are always welcome, whether or not you choose to become a member.
You might be ready for membership when you start feeling a deeper sense of belonging, when you want to take part in shaping the future of the congregation, or when you simply feel called to commit more fully to this spiritual community. Membership includes privileges such as voting and serving in leadership, but more importantly, it marks a personal choice to be part of something meaningful.
What Are the Steps to Becoming a Member?
Because Unitarian Universalism embraces theological diversity, there is no test of belief and no requirement to agree to a creed. We honor your individual spiritual journey.
Membership begins with completing our Path to Membership, a chance to learn more about UU history, values, and community life. When you feel ready, you simply sign the membership book.
Signing the book is a mutual commitment and you must be at least 13 yr old:
- – From you: It’s an expression of your desire to share your time, talents, and energy with our congregation—at whatever level feels right for you*. As one UU minister said, “In joining a Unitarian Universalist church, the initiative is entirely yours. You do not sign on someone else’s dotted line of spiritual development, and there is no fine print.”
- – From us: It is our promise to welcome you fully, to support your growth, and to walk with you as you explore your own evolving search for truth and meaning.
Becoming a member is simply the next step on a journey we are honored to share with you.
- * Voting members must make a contribution of record each year. That may be through time volunteering or $.
